Jesse Boykins III – Dopamine: My Life On My Back

September 20, 2008

What are you having sex to tonight? Mind if I make a recommendation?

While we’re busy waiting for D’Angelo (a musical hero/martyr of mine) to put the coca plant down and apply fingers to Fender- I suggest you all observe the ascension of 23 year old Brooklyn/Chi-Town’s gifted Jesse Boykins III. His debut EP, an ode to the chemical that makes one fall in love or form addictions, was entirely written, produced, engineered and mixed by the 5-octave ranged prodigy (who despite his age, wearing canerows and being confined to the Contemporary R&B categorisation for it, is as far from Lloyd as is Boris Yeltsin).

There’s a rich, hazy-dream, Neo-Soul aura reminiscent here of Raheem DeVaughn and Dwele’s early work and I adore how the lax trumpet weaves in and out of tracks. I bugged out and started making lecherous, erotic mouth contortions when I first heard ‘Sobriety’ five months ago; I also found relation to the visceral, poetic quality of the songwriting that’s as tender as the last sensuous touch to plague the mind after a heartbreak.

My homegirl Rah informs me exclusively Jesse’s debut album ‘Fake It Till U Make It’ is dropping shortly and he’ll be performing live dates in the UK to promote the release some time in the Autumn.

Right now, I sense this kid got next.

Illa J – Illa J EP (2007)

August 28, 2008

Pardon me for being in a Latoyah Jackson state of mind, I had hasty reservations about Dilla’s younger sibling from detecting a few too many clips and excerpts of little homie consistently name-dropping his elder (as if to propel off the fraternal factor more so than his own carvings and musicianship). Then compassion kicked in and I thought, 1. He’s young. 2. Blood is blood. 3. These are our heroes. And frankly I couldn’t give a damn as long as Illa honours the Yancey legacy by making-shit-thump and pushing envelopes for this culture. It’s his birthright, we expect nothing less.

Pressure, demands and all crosses-to-carry aside, I dug out the 21 year old beat-builder/emcee’s 2007 debut EP. And realistically, neither product or producer suck, at all. His rhythms reverberate in signature Detroit quintessence and he’s orally average but fairly entertaining (in the same sufficient way you cannot deny Jaylib or the majority of Dilla’s regional collaborators were/are on the mic), leaving mandatory boxes ticked and ears tickled. Thus far showing promise, I await baby pa’s progression.

And now, I make that demo circulate like Spacek with those Ben Franklins (a currency issue I never quite understood since Steve is from Clapham).

Illa J – We Here (Prod. by J-Dilla)

Photobucket

This leaked a couple days back and completely funked my noggin up. Instant classic! I’m already envisioning my two-step shuck out jig next Feb when J-Dilla Saved My Life at Cargo and all other tribute raves return to London town. Young-blood’s flowing and crooning (heavily improved from his ’07 EP) over an amazing brand new/technically old Jay Dee gem from the vaults From the- wait for it…. [quote from xlr8r.com new article]

In tribute to his late older brother, Detroit hip-hop legend J Dilla, up-and-coming producer John “Illa J” Yancey has dubbed his forthcoming debut album ‘Yancey Boys’.

As previously noted, the album features the younger Yancey [going] over beats made by his older brother that cover the years between 1995 and 1998 and were never used. After a recent move from Detroit to Los Angeles, Illa set to work recording the release, which he named after the studio in which it was made. The album is set to drop in November.

Cue myself crapping underwear. My people, you recognise that’s the period between ‘Labcabincalifornia’ and ‘The Love Movement’ right? Holy bludclart Mutty Ranks!

MF Doom & Trunks Present – Unicron

August 15, 2008

Who be this undergarment-inspired fella Trunks? I only know as much as you: a Canadian emcee featured on the King Gheedora LP. I wasn’t quite expecting any rap revelations this evening, yet Trunks happens to be just that dispensing a mettlesome underground EP that surely most heads will jump on for the special herbs alone.

Unicron dropped unexpectedly like some Chris Wallace bird-shit. Fresh beats specially weeded with Metal Fingers; initially I merely skimmed with fiendish fashion to find a Doom verse much to no avail, yet was countered with a tirade of surprisingly dope dork raps delivered with sharp claws: Stan Lee, Star Wars, Clive Barker, Thor, dragons, all inclusive. Trunks is a discovery, and I’m positively paying attention now.

Nonetheless, a proportion of this shine IS pilfered by the classic (Doom studio standard) drunkard drum taps and histrionic, Lo-Fi instrumentals with breaks unmistakably retrieved from the dead-skin-celled depths of MF’s VHS collection. For all my grubby ‘Operation: Doomsday’ and ‘Mm Food’ goons, these utterly sick sounds should just about keep us at bay until the next grand solo.

Having said that, my restlessness evolves into irritation. First Lib’s resplendently laced Madvillainy Remix piece and now this Doom assembly here- how many more befitting backdrops will drop unjustly untouched by Daniel Dumile?

Janelle Monae – Metropolis: The Chase Suite [Special Edition]

August 13, 2008

Your Mum had this up a month ago via the blockbuster Future Sounds of Soul Music post so ‘fore you diagnose me a senile bugger, understand the EP was re-released in the States yesterday with 2 additional bonus cuts, hence a vital re-up.

I’ve been trying to tell people for months, and I’m back at it again- however due to the lethargic haziness of recent sleep deprivation one is currently at his least comprehensive, so, yeah…

Janelle Monae is the future of your goddamn world. A bold, brilliant, bonafide superstar creature. Recognise.

And I’m esoterically in love with her, with plans to pro-create. Hol’ tight forthcoming babymother.

Amanda Diva – Life Experience

August 11, 2008

In June I shot a stunning Amanda Diva joint titled ‘Windows Over Harlem (Heart of The City)‘ from her upcoming mixtape ‘Foreplay’ over to a couple o’ my homeskillet girlies much to their elation; equal to my own when I’d first discovered it as I’ve had this sincere longing to see the female rap game redeemed.

She’s got a resilience reminiscent of the Blackstar era on the mic. And you know I got love for my B-Girls too.

A little later I received requests to drop her 2007 debut EP which is quite good, though I sense she’s blossomed into her style more comfortably since and I suggest we keep an iris out for Diva in the near future.

All you Kid Sister enthusiasts need to sit your neon-sporting asses the fuck out (bar Amanda’s green hat in the video which I’ll allow for I am biased).

One Day As a Lion – One Day As A Lion EP

July 25, 2008

For the mere fact Zach de la Rocha is back (this being his collaborative project with The Mars Volta’s former sticks-man Jon Theodore).

And we Rage Against The Machine to the death of us.

“The name taken from the infamous 1970 black and white, captured by legendary Chicano photographer George Rodriguez featuring a center framed tag on a white wall in an unspecified section of Boyle Heights. It reads: ‘It’s better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand years as a lamb.’ This record is a stripped down attempt to realize this sentiment in sound.”

Additional:

Just in case you’re refined, sissy, sensibilities have had you 16 years delayed… this is amongst the most powerful albums of the 90s, and one of the most supreme metal records, ever. Zach de la Rocha was the revolutionary voice of a generation and Tom Morello his Fender shredding deputy. ‘Killing In The Name’ makes me want to smash everything in my room to smithereens, burn my entire wardrobe and every material possession or superficial artifact, and then slay any small animals/household pets that come anywhere near me. Whatever happened to rebellion, rejection and anarchic destruction? How we’ve become 21st century hipster pussies.

“FUCK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME, FUCK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME, FUCK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME… MOTHERFUCKERRRRRR”. Word to your Mums.

Nhmiah Su – 16 Hours: The Mixtape

July 23, 2008

6.10am. And before I lay my weary head…

I love this lady and all her split personas: Muhsinah >>> Boozina >>> Nhmiah Su.

Robust, bubbling self-produced soultronica to make the galactic jazz federations bump spaceships unto a DUI arrest. I’m high and my head pulsates with this miniature masterstroke. A more zealously realised piece of work than her prior material, presented to us in under 14 minutes of audio- I go to bed hungry.

Zo! & Tiggalo – Love The 80s EP

July 18, 2008

Despite the current rampant fixation with this peculiar decade, after two full listens I’m not quite sure what the point of this uneven record is/was…

I’ve always found Phonte (Little Brother and Foreign Exchange, if you’re a bit slow) an endearing emcee, and his Percy Miracles alter-ego a tolerable troubadour aswell. Here he presents himself under the camp retro guise of Tiggalo: appearance rather Rick James, but vocally Rick James’ backing singer at the most (unless we’re talking The Mary Jane Girls, then scratch that, but you understand me).

Metro Detroit’s Zo! (keyboardist/beatsmith) has produced some exquisite numbers, most recently coming to mind his gorgeous instrumentation for Median’s joint ‘Simile’ last year. Yet on this set you’ll find lackluster reinterpretations of the 80s most heinous pleasures; this is essentially no more than an unsatisfactory novelty work despite the following claim…

“We had fun recording the record, but its not a ‘joke’ album at all,” says Phonte. “We were very serious with everything, from the vocal side, to the production side, to the final mixing and mastering…it was a real painstaking process to recreate it all. [The album includes covers of ] ‘Take On Me’ by A-Ha, ‘Africa’ by Toto, and a new revamped version of ‘Steppin’ Out’ by Joe Jackson…and that’s all I’mma say…”

The Zo! and Tigallo Love the 80’s EP will be available in early July as a limited edition CD. Only 2,500 copies will be pressed, all individually numbered.

“No iTunes, Amazon, or other any digital spots will have it; once we sell out, its gone forever”

My opinion? Perhaps Phonte should stop pissing about and prolonging my 4 year wait for the second Foreign Exchange album ‘Leave It All Behind’ that is supposedly to fall from the skies finally in late Autumn huh maybe?
