Late Of The Pier – Fantasy Black Channel

September 10, 2008

Current contenders for my favourite new/emerging British band of the year so far…

(I have to keep conjuring up these categories, it gives my life some pretentious level of order & meaning. Leave me.)

The Nottinghamshire four-piece have aligned themselves with Erol Alkan for the entire debut. It’s borderline bonkers. Or atleast better than the Mystery Jet’s album.

Bloc Party – Mercury

August 29, 2008

Shizer. Meant to do this 19 days ago.

The brand spanking (19 day old) single from my favourite British band of the last 5 years (‘Silent Alarm’ was an under-rated Indie classic) warrants a sporadic post.

I’ve always loved the climactic temprement of their song structures with ‘Mercury’ showing further advancement into 21st century New Wave as perhaps the precursor to a more experimental third album (‘Intimacy’ arriving late October). Here garage-rock riffs submit to a livid carnival of uber-Grime electronics making Kele’s brazen, banshee, rebel-cry knife both the stuttering arrangement, and listener. He’s still one of the most distinct, enlivening Indie-Rock vocalists this country’s produced in a long time, and no I’m not just saying that because I’m all pro-ethnic n’ shit, christ.

(Go brown man go.)

Slipknot – All Hope Is Gone

August 28, 2008

Theoretically, Hip-Hop could learn from Slipknot’s steez. No soft filler shit, keep it coming unstoppably harder and harder.

Tough to appreciate for some, personally it wasn’t until I surrendered to repeat listenings of ‘Wait & Bleed’ and ‘Spit It Out’ at the age of 15 that I was left so flabbergasted by the cacophony of noise and yet awestruck at the sheer dynamic of their duel custom percussion (that’s two drummers with two extensively-modified kits simultaneously manifesting the most suffocating, time-signature devastating thwacking you’ll hear in your life). It’s the equivalent of Rodney King receiving a battering by Pontius Pilate’s centurions; the affect of which I’ll say is undeniably brilliant.

On ‘All Hope Is Gone’, they experiment even further with their own aggression and the principle elements of the group’s alpha and omega by incorporating the rawest, darkest, most feral aspects of their self-titled debut, the follow-up ‘Iowa’ and their last ‘Vol. 3: Subliminal Verses’ to conjure up one of the most brutal albums I’ve heard. Keepin’ it real son! Misanthropy, Nihilism, rage, alienation, and psychopathy as standard. Additionally, the sheer, unscaled level of thrash here is enough to make people forget they’re waiting on a new Metallica set.

Relating back to my original point now, it’s as faithful to their own genre as it is loyal to their core fanbase and ultimately undaunted. Slipknot keep it realer than most, and as a music lover/obsessive who’s constantly let down by many fickle, self-contradictory, inconsistent Hip-Hop fall-offs, from a subjective point of view I can appreciate their artistic integrity.

Hol’ tight fellow maggots and misfits. I need to cop one of those new edition masks and terrorise the fuck outta my gran with it.

Garbege Presents… Vietnam Vol. 2 (Mixtape)

August 5, 2008

Masturbate your inner-hipster.

This was released rather unexpectedly with one of my choice cuts of the year ‘She Loves Everybody’ from forthcoming Star Trak signed, prep-school, Harvard white boys Chester French… on some late-60s-chamber-pop-Walker-Brothers-overdosing-on-early-80’s-new-wave-shit, which doesn’t seem to be available elsewhere. Worth downloading for the one joint alone; the rest of the mixtape despite some very capable newbies, is sadly unremarkable.

One Day As a Lion – One Day As A Lion EP

July 25, 2008

For the mere fact Zach de la Rocha is back (this being his collaborative project with The Mars Volta’s former sticks-man Jon Theodore).

And we Rage Against The Machine to the death of us.

“The name taken from the infamous 1970 black and white, captured by legendary Chicano photographer George Rodriguez featuring a center framed tag on a white wall in an unspecified section of Boyle Heights. It reads: ‘It’s better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand years as a lamb.’ This record is a stripped down attempt to realize this sentiment in sound.”

Additional:

Just in case you’re refined, sissy, sensibilities have had you 16 years delayed… this is amongst the most powerful albums of the 90s, and one of the most supreme metal records, ever. Zach de la Rocha was the revolutionary voice of a generation and Tom Morello his Fender shredding deputy. ‘Killing In The Name’ makes me want to smash everything in my room to smithereens, burn my entire wardrobe and every material possession or superficial artifact, and then slay any small animals/household pets that come anywhere near me. Whatever happened to rebellion, rejection and anarchic destruction? How we’ve become 21st century hipster pussies.

“FUCK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME, FUCK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME, FUCK YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME… MOTHERFUCKERRRRRR”. Word to your Mums.
